Cocoon & COVID-19

April 16, 2020

Today, we're rolling out a collection of features to help families stay in-tune with each other's day-to-day health, safety, and well-being.

Cocoon was designed for tight-knit groups who don't get to see each other enough in person, as a space to gather digitally and keep each other close. Since our launch last November, we've been working to steadily fill that space with tools and features that might help you feel more connected to the group that you share it with.

A lot has changed over the past few weeks. Families spread out across households suddenly don't know when they will see each other next, and there's a universal persistent feeling of anxiety around the ongoing health and safety of our loved ones.

The distance between us has never felt wider. The tools we need are evolving.

We've been inspired by the stories we've heard from groups relying on Cocoon throughout this difficult phase, and we'd like to do whatever we can to provide more support. Today we're releasing a deep integration with Apple's Health app, updates around location and safety, and new tools for reflecting on your group's collective experience. Here's a full rundown of what's launching:

A way to share your vitals with members of your Cocoon

You can now add your heart rate and recent body temperature to your live status in Cocoon, if you have a compatible device and choose to opt-in. Heart rate measurement is a now default feature in the Apple Watch and many other wearables. Meanwhile, smart thermometers have been growing in popularity. As an example, Kinsa's thermometer is now accessible to two million people and their interactive maps are being used to track atypical fever rates across geographies. With our latest update, we hope to bring this kind of real-time awareness a little bit closer to home.

Added visibility into how your group is taking shelter

Location features in Cocoon have typically been designed with movement and travel in mind, like being able to share your flights or see when members of your Cocoon are together. These days, simply knowing that your loved ones are at home has become a major source of peace of mind. We've added a temporary feature to share at-home streaks that stretch across multiple days, and we're also offering an opt-in ability to receive a notification when a member of your Cocoon arrives back at home. If you have a family member working on the front lines, you can subscribe to work arrivals too.

Helping celebrate your exercise and mindfulness routines

Staying healthy, both physically and emotionally, has never been more important. As part of the Apple Health integration, you will be able to share your workouts automatically into Cocoon from any connected source (like Strava, Fitbit, or Peloton). Mindfulness sessions (from apps like Calm and Headspace) can be shared as well. If you choose to enable these features, your total daily exercise and mindfulness minutes will be added to your live status alongside step count. We hope these moments can act as a little opportunities for positivity within your daily routines.

A personalized weekly report

Each active Cocoon will receive a personalized Weekly Report every Sunday, created just for their group. These reports will take things like physical activity, travel (or lack thereof!), the weather you're experiencing at home, and activity in Cocoon, and turn them into little visualizations and tidbits that can help you reflect on your week together.

What's next?

We're going to do whatever we can to best support our early user base throughout this period, and this week's release is just the start of a long roadmap to uncover how we might be able to help.

Beyond heart rate and temperature, we'll be closely monitoring the availability of measurement devices for other important health metrics (like blood oxygen saturation) and will add support as they become more widespread. We'll also work to improve Cocoon's capabilities for emotion and feeling-based sharing, beyond the mood updates that exist today. And you can expect to see new types of stories and visualizations in the Weekly Report over time.

We are also making great progress on the Android app — if you'd like to be notified when it's live, you can add your email to this list.

There's a lot more to do, and we have our work cut out for us. If you've been using Cocoon with your family or any other tight-knit group, we hope today's update can provide a little extra comfort. We don't take your vote of confidence lightly. Thank you, and stay safe.
