Come Work With Us

Our mission is to provide everyone with the spaces & tools they need to bring their chosen family closer together.

Smartphones and social software have transformed almost every aspect of our lives as we've congregated into massive global communities on the internet. But despite all our new superpowers, it's become frustratingly difficult to sustain close relationships with the handful of people we care about most. It's a strange and tragic dilemma — the looser the social connection, the stronger our social technology.

Keeping families close-knit, however "family" is defined, has become a weighty challenge. We think it requires specialized social technology, and that the solutions of the past won't carry us into the future.

That's why we're building Cocoon, and we'd love your help.

Team

We are a small and nimble team of social software fanatics. We're optimistic about our ability to augment and enhance the way that people come together with technology, and realistic about how hard it is get it right. To learn a bit more about our thinking, check out our about page.

We've collectively built a lot in our past lives — from everyday tools used by billions, to beloved award-winning apps with passionate followings. Even though our days are filled with pixels and code, we draw most of our inspiration from other timeless fields, outside of software, that examine how and why people come together — like architecture, urban design, sociology, and anthropology.

We are proud and fortunate to be backed by some incredible investors, including Lerer Hippeau, Susa, Norwest, Advancit, Foundation Capital, iNovia, Shrug, SV Angel, and Y Combinator. Thanks to their support, we are able to approach our mission in an especially long-term and ambitious capacity.

Why Join Us?

1. Tackle an important and growing problem for society

Most people will live apart from their chosen family for the majority of their lives, and their primary interface to each other will be digital. As a social software industry, it's our responsibility to ensure that interface is the best it can be.

2. It's a magical and pivotal time

We're well financed with lots of runway, we have a massive surplus of creative ideas and interesting paths to follow, and an early passionate user base to learn from and expand upon.

3. Shape the company in addition to the product

Joining now as one of the first few team members is a unique opportunity to be a true owner (we offer above-market equity grants) and meaningfully shape the trajectory of the company.

Open Roles

iOS Engineer

We build Cocoon in Swift, with Firebase and a separate Node.js back-end. As one of our first engineers, you will take on wide ownership over entire swaths of the codebase, and your day-to-day responsibilities will be varied:

Tap for More
  • Translating Figma designs and Origami prototypes into pixel-perfect UI
  • Identifying and implementing new 3rd party SDKs and open-source libraries as you see fit
  • Analyzing data and experiment results to form new hypotheses and help shape our product strategy
  • Participating in UX interviews, roadmap planning, and new feature idea brainstorms with the entire team
  • Helping grow the team by interviewing new candidates and coaching new hires

Given the human-centric nature of the problem we're tackling and breadth of potential responsibilities, here's a picture of what we're looking for in an ideal new teammate:

  • You are curious, thoughtful, and empathetic — you're more interested in the underlying human behavior that we're trying to augment than the specific technology and techniques we use to do so
  • You can seamlessly float up and down the tech stack (but if you're more comfortable in certain areas that's okay!)
  • You are a great listener, and verbal & written communicator
  • You have strong product intuition, but can change your mind when presented with new information
Android Engineer

As our very first Android Engineer, you will take on full ownership and responsibility of Cocoon's Android app, and your day-to-day responsibilities will be varied:

Tap for More
  • Translating Figma designs and Origami prototypes into pixel-perfect UI
  • Laying out the initial foundation for the app, and owning its release process and operational management after launch
  • Analyzing data and experiment results to form new hypotheses and help shape our product strategy
  • Working with your iOS and back-end teammates to seamlessly execute integration and overall system design

Life at Cocoon

We work from a small studio in the Mission District in San Francisco. Our office overlooks a serene garden courtyard that overflows into our space and changes throughout the seasons. Since we're constantly thinking about how to design the perfect digital space for small groups, we take a lot of pride in our little physical space, too!

Benefits

  • Daily lunch on us (we usually go out to one of the many amazing independent restaurants in our neighborhood) and a fridge + pantry full of coffee, tea, and snacks
  • Company-provided health, dental, and vision insurance as well as paid parental leave
  • A blank check for your ideal work station set up (laptop, keyboard, chair, etc.)
  • Flexible vacation time and regular company holidays
  • Parent-friendly and flexible working hours — we like being present together as a team, but also value getting to work from home when we need to
  • We'll help you relocate to San Francisco if you're currently living somewhere else in the US, or internationally and eligible for a work visa
