How do Cocoon's payroll calculations work?

During an employee’s leave, pay may come from a variety of sources (their employer, state benefits, and/or private short-term disability insurance). Cocoon’s software automatically identifies any benefits an employee is eligible for and guides them through the claims submission process. If you offer paid parental leave, Cocoon automatically calculates how much “top up” pay you owe each employee on leave by deducting the estimated benefits pay amount from their regular salary. We send this information to you via auto-generated pay files customized to your payroll system and pay calendar. 

Does Cocoon handle the transition from medical leave to an ADA leave accommodation?

Short answer: yes. There are two ways Cocoon will prompt employees to explore a leave accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). 1) If an employee does not qualify for medical leave based on applicable leave laws and your company policy, and 2) If the employee tries to extend a medical leave but has exhausted all their time under applicable leave laws (known as “entitlements”) or your policies. In either scenario, Cocoon will prompt employees to consider a leave accommodation and walk them through their options and the process.

If employees plan leaves in private, how do you make sure they comply with our company policies?

Great question. During onboarding, you’ll work with our Onboarding Specialist to input your leave policies into our system. This includes parameters like tenure requirements, time available, pay, insurance plan, and more. When employees plan a leave, they fill in certain personal information (other things like tenure and salary we know from your census data) and our software checks that against your policies plus FMLA and applicable state leave laws to calculate eligibility and show employees their options. The result is an efficient, consistent, and reliable leave planning process that ensures compliance.  

Do I have to offer paid medical leave to use Cocoon?
